Here are some ideas of drills you can use for a variety of skill building.

Sharks & minnows
Make a box or circle out of the cones- have every player but one inside the box or circle with a ball. The one player with out a ball is the shark- the object is for the one player to kick all the other players balls outside of the box or circle- once a players ball is outside the box or circle they can either join in trying to get the balls away from other players or sit out side the box with their ball- the last player left becomes the next shark- do it a three or four times- most kids seem to love this drill and it helps them gain control of the ball and maneuver the ball around. (aprox time 5-10 minutes)

SCORE!
Make a box ( aprox 15x20) with a goal on each side- divide your team in ½’s or ¼’s – you need the equal number of players on each team if you are down a player one of the coaches can join in. Number each player or give them a color- each team has the same number and or colors per player for example team A and B has 5 player – each team will have a red, green, yellow, blue and purple player. Place each team at opposite ends- the coach will throw a ball into the middle of the box in the air and call out a color- that color from each team will race to the ball and try to score- you can call more than one player at a time and change around the colors or numbers of the players you call (aprox 10 minutes)

Another version of this is to set a rectangle space about ½ filed size and place a goal on each end line- divide the players into two teams. The coach throws the ball into the field one at a time and the players can score at any goal- once a score has been made a new ball gets thrown onto the field.

Relays
Run relay races for skill drills-
-       Dribble between cones
-       Running backwards
-       Running forwards
-       Dribble then shot or pass to another player
-       Crab walk while dribbling (really good for keeping the ball close while dribbling)
-       Throw-ins
-       Use your imagination for any other races you can think of – the kids love it -it keeps it fun and they learn some basic skills.

Obstacle Course
This is a great way to have everyone involved- set up a course using cones. Place one player at each station- as the players move through the course they pass the ball forward and then receive from the player behind.  The stations could include:

·      Dribbling thru cones to
·      Stop ball & pass w/ left foot to
·      Stop ball and throw-in to
·      Move to throw in & dribble around coach & pass
·      Shoot on goal
·      Skip, run backwards, dribble, pass or sprint back to the start -change it up

Monkey in the middle
Set up three alleys with your cones. Split the group in half and line them up at the start of the two outside alleys. Coaches- two or three are in the middle alley spread out- One line of players has the ball. The players need to pass the ball 3 to 4 times back and fourth with out the coaches or the monkey getting the ball while moving down the alley.

The key here is to remember the girls are 8 & 9 years old. They need to learn and master some basic skills for soccer- but they also need to have fun!!
